What is The ETF Institute?

The ETF Institute is the first and only independent organization providing financial professionals with certification, education, and training pertaining to exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Through The ETF Institute, financial professionals can earn the professional designation, Certified ETF Advisor (CETF). The ETF Institute awards this designation to candidates who successfully pass a comprehensive examination, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of ETFs and their multiple uses in asset management and portfolio construction.

How do I become a member of The ETF Institute and a Certified ETF Advisor (CETF)?

    To become a member of The ETF Institute and earn your CETF designation, follow these simple steps:
  • Step 1: Fill out the registration form
  • Step 2: Agree to the ETF Institute’s Code of Ethics
  • Step 3: Pay $295 membership fee (and annual renewal fee)
  • Step 4: Elect whether to receive your daily news and commentary email from industry experts
  • Step 5: Download the Study Guide and prepare for the exam
  • Step 6: Successfully complete the Certified ETF Advisor exam

What score do I need to pass the CETF examination?

A passing score is 70%. The CETF exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions.

How much does membership to The ETF Institute cost?

There is a $295 initial membership fee and annual renewal is also $295.

How do I receive my free subscription to ETFdb Pro ?

Upon registration with The ETF Institute, you will automatically receive your free subscription to ETFdb Pro. You will be notified directly via e-mail by on how to access your subscription.

Do I need to renew my membership annually?

Yes. In order to satisfy continuing education requirements and continue using the CETF designation, you must be an active member of The ETF Institute.

Are there continuing education requirements for the CETF designation?

Yes. The ETF Institute requires 15 hours of continuing education every 2 years. Currently, The ETF Institute accepts a wide variety of industry-related continuing education including attendance at ETF-related conferences, seminars and webinars. You will be notified to submit your CE credits within 30 days prior to your 2-year anniversary of passing the CETF examination.

Does my firm approve the use of the CETF designation?

You should contact your firm’s compliance officer or department for guidance on the use of the CETF designation. Requirements vary from firm to firm.

How long does it take to study for the CETF exam?

The average study time for the CETF exam is typically 10 – 15 hours, though this can vary from candidate to candidate.

Where do I take the CETF exam?

The CETF exam is conducted online via The ETF Institute website.

Do I receive a certificate upon successfully passing the CETF exam?

Yes. You will receive a formal, printable certificate online upon successfully completing the CETF examination.

Can I use the CETF designation on my business cards, e-mails, etc?

Candidates who are current members of The ETF Institute®, have met all certification requirements, and have not violated any aspect of The ETF Institute’s® code of ethics, may use the CETF designation. See our terms and conditions for additional information.
